SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — The YMCA of Northwest Louisiana is honoring the courageous men and women who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, by helping others understand the sacrifices first responders made when they rushed into the World Trade Center.

Since 2018, the BHP Billiton YMCA has hosted an annual 9/11 Commemorative Stair Climb. Participants are encouraged to take part in the challenge of climbing 110 flights or approximately 2,000 steps, the same amount from the ground floor of the World Trade Center.

"We opened in March of 2017. And we had a member climb on one of our stair masters, with the previous branch director's permission, in full gear. And when I got in this role in March of 2018, he came to me and said 'Hey, can I do that again? I just wanted to check with you,'
