New York City observed a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. Thursday, the same time when the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11.
It marked 24 years since the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people, and has since claimed the lives of many others through related illnesses from the aftermath.
That includes first responders who arrived at the scene to help survivors and were exposed to the dust and particles that came from the building collapses.
