LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Less than a month remains for the state government to pass Michigan’s final budget, which could lead to the shutdown of state facilities, including state parks and rest stops.

The 2025-26 fiscal year budget was supposed to be done by July 1. The Michigan Senate passed its budget proposal back in May, while the State House passed its version in late August.

But now, as an Oct. 1 deadline approaches, state officials are making preparations for the potential of a government shutdown.

Lansing City Clerk Chris Swope said a shutdown could also impact elections, as voter registration occurs through the Secretary of State’s branch office transactions.
