SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

California State Senator Monique Limón will take the reins of the State Senate sooner than expected, Senate President Pro Tem Mike McGuire announced abruptly on Thursday night.

Democratic Senators who control the upper house of the state legislature voted for Limón to be their next Pro Tem earlier this year . She was expected to step into the leadership position at the start of 2026. Now, she'll take over on Nov. 17, 2025.

Multiple sources told KCRA 3 that Democrats had been circulating a letter and gathering signatures from Senators on Thursday, urging McGuire to step down from the leadership position immediately.
