BLOOMFIELD – The last time Ansonia and Bloomfield faced each other was the last game of last season in the Class S state championship.
Ansonia dominated in that game and Bloomfield had all of its off-season to think about it. And in the first game of the season Thursday night, the Warhawks had a chance to avenge that loss, playing Ansonia for the first time at Bloomfield.
But Bloomfield fell in a close game, 23-14.
Ansonia, who has played Bloomfield eight times in the state championship game, won the matchup last year, 58-12 and had beaten the Warhawks in a close game for the title in 2022.
Daniel Ayala scored what proved to be the game winner on a 51-yard TD pass on the first play of the fourth quarter. The Chargers scored on a safety late in the fourth quarter.
