GREENFIELD, Wis. (WKOW) -- A new mosquito species has been spotted in Wisconsin.

The Asian tiger mosquito, originally from Southeast Asia, has now been found in small populations near Madison and Milwaukee, according to Nick Dowdy of the Milwaukee Public Museum.

According to our Milwaukee affiliate, the invasive species was first discovered in Wisconsin in 2017.

"They're called that because they have black and white stripes on their body, not because they're particularly dangerous compared to other mosquitoes," Dowdy said. "However, they can carry diseases like West Nile and Zika."

Fortunately, the tiger mosquito cannot survive Wisconsin winters.
