CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — Southeast Missouri State spoiled Iowa's bid for history and beat the Hawkeyes 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-22, 15-7) in game one of the SEMO Invite on Thursday.
The Hawkeyes (6-1, 0-0 Big Ten) would’ve set a new program record with a win over the Redhawks (4-3, 0-0 Ohio Valley). Iowa’s 6-0 start matched the best start in 16 years and marked the fourth such start to a season in program history (2009, 1988, 1978).
Chard’e Vanzandt led the Hawkeyes with an Iowa career-high 22 kills. The Chattanooga transfer hit .312 in the match.
Freshman outside hitter Carmel Vares recorded a career-high 17 kills. Alyssa Worden added 10 kills.
Senior setter Claire Ammeraal dished 45 assists to go along with seven kills, seven digs and four blocks.
