OWENSBORO, Ky. (WEHT) -- A partnership with the YMCA and an Owensboro school is helping students learn about water safety.

The YMCA Safety Around Water program hopes to make an impact on second graders at Sutton Elementary School by providing valuable tips for both in and out of the water.

"The great thing about this is we survey and most have no formal swim lessons when they come to us in the second grade here through the school system,” chief development officer Kristi Harrison said. “We get to be their first swim lesson. Not only are they learning how to get in the water safely, get out of the water safely, they're building those skills so they are hopefully more confident to go their neighborhood pool this summer."
