Steve Cody, a councilman in Palmetto Bay, Florida, faced calls to resign on Thursday after publishing a post on Facebook in which he appeared to mock the Christian faith of slain conservative commentator Charlie Kirk in the immediate moments after his assassination.

Cody wrote a post on his personal account, sharing a quote by Kirk defending Second Amendment rights, calling the political organizer and television host a “fitting sacrifice” at the altar of gun rights.

“Charlie Kirk is a fitting sacrifice to our Lords: Smith and Wesson. Hallowed be their names,” Cody wrote , the latter an apparent reference to the Lord’s Prayer.
