SAN MARINO — When you have a potent and reliable quarterback-receiver connection like Maranatha’s Cooper Berry and Nico Vergara, bouncing back from a loss can look easy.

Berry threw for 344 yards and five touchdowns while Vergara caught 10 passes for 186 yards and two touchdowns to lead Maranatha to a hard-fought win, 42-28, over San Marino on Thursday night in nonleague action.

“I thought it was good for the kids,” said Maranatha coach Rand Holdren when asked about bouncing back from last week’s 43-0 loss to a very tough Rio Hondo Prep squad.

Berry agreed.

“It was a good game,” he said. “I can’t thank my offensive line enough also my defense for stepping up in big moments. And also (Vergara) and the other receivers.”
