Police horses could outlast cop cars, a commissioner has predicted, as the world's oldest continuous mounted unit commemorates its bicentennial.

The NSW Mounted Police Unit, which pre-dates more famous Canadian and English counterparts, marked 200 years of service in a ceremony in the gleaming harbour of Australia's emerald city.

About 100 current and retired officers, including 24 on horseback, showed off their animals in a street parade from Sydney's centre to the steps of the Opera House.

Other members of the force, armed with shovels and growing carts of manure, followed closely behind.

"Our officers, our horses, our traditions continue," Acting NSW Police Commissioner Peter Thurtell told reporters in Sydney on Friday.
