The historic Cathedral City home of acclaimed desert modernist painter Agnes Pelton (1881-1961) was the scene of an intimate gathering on Aug. 22 to commemorate the 144th anniversary of her birth.

Pelton, whose lifelong spiritual search was reflected in her work, had a keen interest in numerology, and the number 144 is considered particularly auspicious, associated with creativity and spiritual awakening.

A small group gathered at the home to enjoy a cake replica of the 1952 painting "Departure," one of Pelton's best-known works, created by local artist Tracy Nazaroff, and to learn about Pelton's latest recognition. As a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, I brought the news that Pelton has been named one of 145 DAR Dazzling Daughters.
