PRESIDENT Donald Trump attended the New York Yankees' game against the Detroit Tigers on Thursday night to mark the 24th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

Trump, 79, told the Yankees that he thinks they will "get in the play-off" in a message to the team ahead of the game.

The 45th and 47th president shook hands with players and staff in the locker room prior to their 9-3 victory over the Tigers.

Trump , who was a close friend with late Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, said: "You're going to win.

"I want to wish you guys a lot of luck. You're great players."

"You're going to go all the way, and you'll get in the play-off -- and I think we'll start off, how about tonight?

"We'll start from tonight on, and you're going to do well."
