Shortly after midnight on April 16, 1906, more than 600 people staying at the French Lick Springs Hotel were jolted from sleep by a loud explosion in the nearby casino clubroom.

Some of the male guests, fearful that safe robbers were at work, grabbed their revolvers and ran outside in search of the culprits. After these efforts proved fruitless, a posse was organized at daylight, with men on horseback scouring the countryside to no avail.
