NORMAN — John Mateer snagged the shotgun snap, faked a handoff and cradled the ball to his side.

All of his momentum was headed left. Ditto for his blockers.

But then amid the swirl of crimson and cream and maize and blue last Saturday night, he seemed to see space opening to his right. He jumpstopped. It was a move more reminiscent of a point guard instead of a quarterback, but the OU signal caller stopped with both feet, then quickly changed direction and left a hard-charging safety lunging at air.
