Charles Khang’a, 42, from Mulanje District, sustained severe burns after his house caught fire.
The incident occurred on Thursday at around 12 noon in Gladson Village, Njema area.
According to the district police spokesperson, Innocent Moses, Khang’a was known for selling illegal motor oil and is suspected to have been storing drums of petrol inside his house at the time of the incident.
“People were shocked when something exploded while the man was inside the house and the fire broke out. Fortunately, some passersby and neighbours had the courage to pull him out and managed to remove some of the fuel to prevent the fire from spreading,” Moses explained.
He is currently receiving treatment at Mulanje District Hospital.
