It goes without saying that violent images are horrifying to watch. It’s why NBC News has a longstanding policy of not showing them on TV. We typically freeze a video before the moment of impact, blur out gory parts and give a warning before images of violence air.

But on social media, it only takes seconds for a violent video to spread around the world. After the shooting death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk to the brutal stabbing death of a Ukrainian refugee on a train, many of our social media feeds have been flooded with violent videos in recent weeks.
