"The Sound of Music" is celebrating it's 60th anniversary this year, and the celebrations include a return to theaters starting Sept. 12.

But what happened to the real family behind the Julie Andrews classic after the sang their last note?

Maria and the von Trapp family were actually real people, and they really did escape Austria as the Nazi Party rose to power. They also settled in Vermont and established a lodge, according to the Trapp Family Lodge website.

"In the early 1940s, the von Trapp family toured the United States as the Trapp Family Singers before eventually settling in Stowe, Vermont, on an enchanted farm with sweeping mountain vistas reminiscent of their beloved Austria," the website said.
