(FOX40.COM) — The Sacramento Police Department will be conducting a driving under the influence checkpoint within the city limits on Friday night. • Video above: States with the most strict DUI laws
The checkpoint is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. and will last until early Saturday morning, police said. The main focus of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking "suspected impaired drivers off the road."
“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Sergeant Anna Mahoney said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”
Drivers who are charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties as well as a suspended license, according to SPD.
