IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - An Iowa Congresswoman says the University of Iowa’s Center for Intellectual Freedom should be renamed after slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-Iowa 1st District) put forward the suggestion on her X account saying it would honor “a true defender of free speech and open debate”.
Kirk was assassinated Wednesday while holding one of his signature public debate events on a college campus in Utah. It is widely regarded as an act of political violence, though the motives of the alleged shooter are not known publicly yet. Many Republicans have praised Kirk’s willingness to open and public debate with those who disagreed with him.
