CHICAGO — The mother of a woman shot and killed in the South Loop is speaking out publicly for the first time about her death.

According to Chicago police, the person taken into custody after Monday's fatal shooting of Romeca Meeks-Blackmon, 31, has been released without charges.

Her family is eagerly seeking justice.

"Someone has to pay for this. It's not right," said her mother, Tina McMiller.

Surrounded by family and overwhlemed with grief, McMiller says she's heartbroken after losing her daughter to gun violence.

Meeks-Blackmon had just dropped off her son at school near Cermak Road and State Street, when police said the victim was involved in a physical altercation with another person. The offender then took out a gun and fired it — striking Meeks-Blackmon in the face.
