A young Kitchener woman who pleaded guilty to extorting and threatening to kill a man was handed a “pretty restrained” sentence.

In June 2024, the woman and a man met and exchanged texts. He invited her to his apartment for a night of drinking with his male friend, court was told this week. The three “began to talk and drink.”

They then went to his friend’s apartment on Albert Street in Waterloo.

At 6 a.m., the woman, 24, told the two men she was “broke, depressed and had been thinking about suicide,” said Crown prosecutor Tayzia Collesso. Court was not told the men’s ages.

The woman asked the tenant to give her $500. When he refused, she threatened to summon her friends to kill both him and his friend.
