The Reno City Council voted unanimously on Wednesday, Sept. 10, to approve the first reading of allowing accessory dwelling units to be created in Reno.

The ordinance will get a second read and possible approval at the Sept. 24 meeting.

ADUs, commonly referred to as granny flats , are often used for an aging parent or college-age child who wants their own space.

“ They’re accessories to primary structures in single-family zones … especially in unaffordable locations,” Reno's senior management analyst, Grace Mackedon, said at the meeting. “It’s a tool in the toolbox we can use to address affordable housing.”

Reno has had the ADU conversation before. The city council passed an ordinance in 2007 to prohibit them, and an effort to reverse that in 2018 failed, Mackedon said.
