SULPHUR, La. (KPLC) - Several birds were killed in an overnight chicken coop fire in Sulphur, according to the Houston River Fire Department.

Around 3:30 a.m., Houston River firefighters responded to a call in the area of West Houston River Road and Gill Drive and saw a chicken coop on fire.

Ward Six Fire District #1 arrived to assist, and firefighters were able to contain the blaze.

About 18 to 20 chickens and two turkeys were lost in the fire, but 10 to 12 chickens were able to escape, Houston River FD said.

No firefighters were hurt.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but firefighters said they currently suspect a heat lamp on baby turkeys started the fire.
