Porepunkah resident Merelyne Robinson lives with mitochondrial myopathy, a disease that causes muscle weakness.

At 84 years old, her disease predominantly affects her eyesight, and she needs a walker to get around.

Through Alpine Health's Home Care Packages Program, she has been receiving daily welfare checks, assisted showers three times a week, fortnightly grocery trips, and weekly domestic support with cooking, laundry and cleaning.

But that in-home support abruptly ended almost three weeks ago, on August 26, when fugitive Desmond Freeman allegedly shot and killed two police officers a five-minute drive from her home.

Alpine Health declared a level of emergency that prevented its staff from entering the area.
