OTTAWA — The Canadian government is actively engaging with Alberta and oil companies regarding a federal emissions cap for the oil and gas sector. Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson made this announcement during a news conference in Winnipeg. He emphasized that both the provincial government and industry stakeholders recognize the need for a "fundamental change in the emissions intensity of the oilsands."
Hodgson described the discussions as "productive" but clarified that the government will not "negotiate through the media" regarding the specifics of the emissions cap. He did not provide details on whether the cap would be reduced.
Last year, the federal government announced plans to implement an emissions cap aimed at reducing emissions from oil and gas production by 35 percent compared to 2019 levels. However, this cap has yet to be put into effect.
Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin reiterated the government's commitment to addressing climate change. She stated that the government is currently reviewing feedback on the proposed emissions cap regulations. The discussions come as Canada continues to navigate its environmental policies in the context of the oil and gas industry.
