On Aug. 31, 2022, a man residing in Ontario with no driver’s licence was driving a car that did not belong to him at speeds estimated at 150 km/h on a country road with a speed limit of 80 km/h when he asked his girlfriend in the passenger seat to steer while he leaned over to roll a joint.
Yonas Gebremekeal, 26, lost control of the vehicle. There was a collision and the passenger died of her injuries a short time later in hospital. At the scene of the collision, witnesses observed Gebremekeal emerge from nearby bushes where law enforcement later found he had hidden cocaine. He was transported to hospital and suffered a concussion, brain bleed, and broken collarbone.
