CONNECTICUT (WTNH) — September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month, which prioritizes focus on education, advocacy, research and support for patients.
There are more than 100 different types of blood cancer, including leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
News 8 spoke with Dr. Madhavi Gorusu, an oncologist with Hartford Healthcare's Cancer Institute. According to Gorusu, early detection is key in fighting the disease and knowing the warning signs.
"If there are any unexplained fevers, night sweats going on for several weeks and any unexplained nosebleeds, gum bleeds or easy bruising or if you feel a lump in your armpit, neck or groin, these are the usual telltale signs of the lymph nodes swelling," Gorusu said.
She said if anyone experiences these symptoms, seek medical attention.
