President Donald Trump announced plans to deploy the National Guard to Memphis on Friday, citing the move as a necessary step to "fix" crime in the city.

Memphis is one of several cities where President Trump says he intends to send the National Guard. The timeline for deploying troops to Memphis is unclear. The president has previously deployed troops to Los Angeles, California and Washington, D.C.

Tennessee's Republican Gov. Bill Lee supports the plan, saying in a statement that he worked with the Trump administration for months on a strategy to combat crime in Memphis.

Local Democratic leadership in Memphis is divided.

The mayor of Shelby County, where Memphis is located, strongly opposed the plan, calling it "disappointing."
