SHREVEPORT, La. - If you’ve ever been intimidated by the idea of starting plants from seeds, fall is actually one of the best times to give it a try. That’s according to Jennifer McGimsey at Akin’s Nursery, who says cooler weather makes seed starting much easier.

“Fall is a great time to venture out into the seed starting world because you can do it directly outside,” McGimsey explained. “You don’t have to worry about heat lamps or special lighting—just drop your seeds in the soil and you’ll have a lot of luck.”

Beginner-Friendly Vegetables

For those new to gardening, McGimsey recommends sticking with crops that can tolerate a light freeze. Leafy vegetables like lettuce, kale, spinach, Swiss chard, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and broccoli all thrive in cooler temperatures.
