COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho — Coeur d'Alene Public Schools is discontinuing its Driver Education program effective November 12, saying the move will save families money and better align with state law.
A 2024 Idaho law gives families the option to complete driver education through a parent-led model. The school district is taking advantage of the change, which it says will save money for families and the district.
The district's driving program currently operates at an annual deficit of almost $28,000, according to a press release. This year, the program would need a new training vehicle and a new teacher — the district's only certified instructor will retire in November.
If the district had maintained the program through these changes, the current $275 fee would jump to roughly $375-$405 pe
