ANTRIM COUNTY, MI – A 19-year-old man from Big Rapids who allegedly fled the scene of a crash while under the influence is facing several charges after a Northern Michigan police dog helped sniff out drugs buried in local woods near the highway in Star Township.

The Antrim County Sheriff’s Office was called to a single-vehicle crash shortly after 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11, on U.S. 131 near Turner Road, where the subject was reported to have driven off the road into a ditch, causing damage that disabled the vehicle as he attempted to back out.

According to a news release, witnesses told the responding Antrim County deputy that the 19-year-old left the scene walking down Turner Road with a backpack.

When the driver returned to the scene, he no longer had the backpack, police said.
