Attorneys for Gov. Kim Reynolds say emails between her aides should be withheld not just from reporters but from the judge assigned to determine whether they are legally confidential.
Reynolds' office is suing the Des Moines Register , arguing documents requested by the newspaper should be shielded under executive privilege — a legal doctrine recognized by some courts protecting an elected leader's right to get confidential guidance and input from advisors. Executive privilege is not explicitly named in Iowa's Constitution or in the state's open record laws.
