PORTLAND, Maine - The mayor of Portland is asking Maine’s leaders at the federal level to address the concerns that have been raised after a parent was detained near a school by officers who would not identify themselves.

In a letter sent to Portland Public Schools families and staff members, Superintendent Ryan Scallon said the incident happened at about 8 a.m. Thursday on the access road for the Gerald E. Talbot Community School.

Scallon said “unidentified law enforcement agents” who were in unmarked vehicles and wearing vests marked “police” detained a parent who had just dropped their child off at school.
