For the past several nights, Kristina Ramirez has fallen asleep on a video call. Her husband, Sergio Ramirez, is on the screen 1,800 miles away in Zacatecas, Mexico.

The Midlothian couple hasn’t seen each other in the months after they were detained by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in Detroit, Michigan, near the Canadian border, they told the Sun-Times.

Sergio Ramirez, who came to the U.S. from Mexico when he was 16, left the country Sept. 7 after weeks in immigration detention.

“My greatest fear already happened,” Kristina Ramirez said. “My greatest fear was that he self-deported.”

The couple was on a trip to Detroit for a possible work project on May 29. They were driving near the U.S. and Canada border when they realized they were going the wrong way and turned around. Th
