Skaneateles, N.Y. — The Onondaga County Health Department has issued a blue-green algae advisory for Skaneateles Lake after state officials confirmed a harmful algal bloom.

Testing detected microcystin toxins which are produced by certain types of blue-green algae in raw, untreated lake water, officials said Friday.

The public water supply remains safe, county health officials said. There is no evidence of toxins in the drinking water drawn from Skaneateles Lake.

Residents and visitors are urged to stay out of areas where algae is visible. Blue-green algae can turn water green or form thick scums along the surface. Some types release toxins that can irritate the skin, eyes and if ingested can cause vomiting and diarrhea.
