The supermarket chain Kroger announced earlier this week that it is laying off nearly 1,000 workers.
According to Reuters, the job cuts will only affect corporate staff. Those that work in stores, manufacturing facilities or distribution centers will not be affected.
“In the past few months, we have all looked for ways to simplify the organization, shift resources closer to our customers, and focus on work that creates the most value,” Kroger’s interim CEO Ron Sargent said in a memo.
The memo also said the chain plans to reinvest its savings into lowering prices, opening new locations and creating store-level jobs, Reuters reported.
As of February, Krogers employed 409,000 people. In June it announced it planned to close 60 underperforming stores over a period of 18 months.
