BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - The Better Business Bureau of Central and South Alabama hosted their free Shred Day on Friday.
Bureau officials say around 300 cars came through, and they collected about 17,000 pounds of paper that was shredded and recycled.
The organization’s president, Carl Bates, said you should always shred important documents instead of tearing them up and throwing them away. There are people out there going through trash and searching for that information.
“When you go through identity theft, your credit cards, your Drivers License, your Social Security number, Medicare, house mortgages...all of that is involved in that,” Bates said. “It’s so much easier to just shred the stuff, not allow the scammers to gather information on you, and not have your identity stolen.”
