An 82-year-old woman is in custody after authorities say she shot her husband in a Hilton Head health care facility during the morning of Sept. 12.

Harriett Kay Recker was taken into custody when deputies discovered her in her husband’s room at Preston Health Center . He was suffering from a gunshot wound.

The 81-year-old man, who has not yet been identified, died from his wounds.

Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office deputies said they responded to a report of gunfire at the facility located at 87 Birdsong Way around 10:30 a.m. They found Recker in her husband’s room and began lifesaving measures on her husband that were ultimately to no avail.

Deputies charged Recker with murder, according to online jail records.
