SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (KOLO) - On Friday, Sept. 12, someone called a US Bank customer, said he was a US Marshals agent, and asked the person to empty their bank account, according to a South Lake Tahoe Police Department news release.
The suspect said a courier would pick up the cash that would go to the US Marshals Service.
The scammer said the money would be paid back via a reimbursement check, the news release said.
The scammer had personal details about the victim.
A US Bank manager reported the attempted fraud to the police.
The suspect’s caller ID showed the South Lake Tahoe Police Department’s phone number.
“The SLTPD wants to remind the public that we, nor any legitimate government agency, will never call and request cash to support our operations,” the news release said. “
