Thousands of members of Queensland's Papua New Guinean community have celebrated half a century of the country's independence with traditional music, dancing, art, and food.

Papua New Guinea (PNG) was an Australian territory until September 16, 1975, when the country gained independence.

To mark the country's globally significant milestone, the PNG community in Queensland hosted a major festival on Saturday in Logan, south of Brisbane.

Around 5,000 people were expected to attend the event, with people travelling from across Queensland, interstate and PNG.

Papua New Guinea Federation Queensland Incorporated's Veronica Henderson said the day was a celebration of culture and independence.
