Coyotes are everywhere in Massachusetts, with the Mass Audubon Society estimating the state has about 12,000 coyotes.

They're in every city and town, except for the islands, and for the most part largely keep away from people.

But, with 12,000 running around, there is a decent chance of seeing one and sometimes there are incidents between humans and the canines. For example, in August 2024 a jogger was bit by a coyote and in May 2025 two coyotes reportedly attacked a dog in Brookline.
