Moments after his team had beaten the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 32-21, Scott Milanovich stepped behind the podium in the media room to talk about the game. But he didn’t speak about football. Not much, anyway.

Friday was more about life. And death.

“That was the toughest day of my football career, bar none,” the Hamilton Tiger-Cats head coach said.

You likely already know why. Fifteen hours earlier, he’d learned his friend and general manager, Ted Goveia, had passed away after a battle with cancer.

Preparing for a game under the weight of that was difficult. When the players arrived at the stadium – they’d learned about Goveia’s death via email from the team that morning – they all gathered for a prayer.
