Nelson and his wife, Shannon Crooks, live in the Forest Hill area and share a car. That leaves Nelson relying on his bike for both daily errands and social outings.

“I do grocery runs, go to the farmer’s market, I’ll put my wife in the basket and we’ll go on dates,” he said. “I’m pretty much an exclusive biker.”

Unfortunately, that also means that his life is regularly at risk, he said.

“The bicycling infrastructure leaves a lot to be desired,” Nelson said. “And nobody … seems interested in enforcement.”

Nelson is hardly alone. This week, The Times-Dispatch spoke with multiple cyclists — all of whom shared the same concerns that members of Richmond’s biking community have been voicing for years.
