On a warm, quiet morning, Aug. 27, Minneapolis children gathered for Mass at Annunciation Catholic School. Suddenly, bullets and crashing glass punctuated the peace, piercing the bodies of children.

A 23-year-old, Robin Westman, murdered two children, injuring around 20, before the shooter’s suicide.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said Westman, armed with a rifle, shotgun and pistol, shot through the windows.

It is appropriate that the White House urged flags lowered to half-staff. It is appropriate for Gov. Tim Walz to say, “It’s my strongest desire that no state, no community, no school ever experiences a day like this.”

It’s even appropriate to offer “thoughts and prayers.” But that is not enough.
