The family of a jailed armed robber who died of cancer weren't told he was terminally ill for more than four months, an investigation found.
Nathan Walters, of Salford , died in a hospice in April 2023. The 38-year-old was serving a imprisonment for public protection (IPP) sentence for his role in a notorious armed robbery at a florists in Old Trafford in July 2011.
After being confronted by four men with guns and a knife as he locked up his Feathers, Frills and Flowers shop in Shrewsbury Street, the 72-year-old florist Cecil Coley fatally stabbed one of the intruders, Gary Mullings, 30, of New Moston , in self-defence during a struggle. Mr Coley was later arrested on suspicion of his murder, but the Crown Prosecution Service decided he acted in self-defence.
