The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced their intention to rescind the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule. This rule currently “prohibits road construction, road reconstruction, and timber harvesting” on tens of millions of acres of National Forest System lands. Public comment on this rule is open until September 19th, 2025, and can be made under the FS-2025-0001 document posted on regulations.gov : https://www.regulations.gov/document/FS-2025-0001-0001 . Over 78,000 comments have currently been submitted. The original adoption of the rule generated over 1.6 million comments, with over 90% in favor of adopting the rule.
