CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) — Firefighters from Albemarle County and the City of Charlottesville gathered at the John Paul Jones Arena on Friday morning to honor the first responders who lost their lives during the September 11 terrorist attacks, now 24 years ago.

Members of the Albemarle County Department of Fire Rescue and the Charlottesville Fire Department participated in a 9/11 memorial stair climb, an annual tradition meant to commemorate the sacrifices made by emergency personnel on that day. Participants climbed the equivalent of 110 stories—or approximately 2,200 steps—often while wearing full firefighting gear.
