A piece of Hunterdon County history is going to auction.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection plans to sell the old Saxtonville Tavern in Delaware Township.

It is opening public comment on the potential auction of a 1782 stone building.

The building is located on Route 29 near the Kingwood border across from Bulls Island State Park.

While the state isn’t having a formal public hearing on the sale, it’s offering a chance for people to provide written comments before seeking approvals for the sale.

The state acquired the tavern and eight acres in 2007 but lacked the resources to maintain it.

An auction would open the 240-year-old property to private ownership while preserving its historical significance.
