Canada is off to a hot start at the World Athletic Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
Richmond, B.C. native Evan Dunfee took home gold for Canada in race-walking during the first day of action at the games, finishing the 35-kilometre race with a time of 2:28:22.
“We started Team Canada off on the right foot, gold medal, thank you so, so much everyone back home, cheering me on,” Dunfree said in a reel posted by Athletics Canada on Instagram.
The 34-year-old then gave a shout out to his partner while fighting back tears.
“Especially Sarah, I love you so much, wish you could have been here,” Dunfree said. “But, the next best thing is that I get to bring [the gold medal] home.”
